Hello,

First, a quick recap (those of you following the 2.1 thread in the open discussion forum can skip to the end). Back at Macworld we announced NoteBook 2.1. At the same time, however, Apple announced that they would begin shipping Intel Macs a full six months earlier than they originally said. At that point we were under the gun to get a Universal version of NoteBook out to customers. The big question was should we make a Universal version of 2.0, or leave 2.0 alone and have everyone wait for us to ship 2.1 (which will be Universal). We decided that making a Universal version of NoteBook available ASAP was the right thing to do, and that meant building a Universal version of 2.0.

Steve Jobs said that depending on the complexity of your project, it may take no time at all or months and months to make the transition to Intel. I had actually done all the work to make NoteBook processor-independent back before NoteBook 1.0 shipped, and so it took me just 20 minutes to get NoteBook 2.0 compiled and running on an Intel Mac. But shipping a software product is much more than just getting your code to compile. There are lots of considerations, not the least of which is a beta testing cycle. Whenever there's a serious change (in this case, using a new compiler to build NoteBook against a new version of the OS, running on a new chip), you have to go through one of these cycles, and they take time and resources. Productizing NoteBook 2.0 Universal and dealing with OS X incompatibilities has jostled the 2.1 schedule we had put together before Apple announced Intel Macs.

Now that the Universal version of NoteBook 2.0 is available, we are able to devote resources back to 2.1 and have rescheduled it to ship in the second half of May. We might be able to bring this date in some depending on how the beta testing cycle goes, but it's probably safer to assume not. Thank you for your patience as we bring this new release to life.
